Take the STCW and Be a Step Closer to Your Seafaring Career

Nov 21, 2016

The maritime industry is considered to be the oldest and one of the most significant trades carrying roughly 90% goods worldwide. In fact, there are nearly 55,000 cargo ships from different parts of the globe sailing around the world every day. To maintain the standards of shipping operations, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) established the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW). The STCW was developed to ensure that every seafarer, regardless of their origin or nationality, possesses quality level of skills and understanding of the standard procedure of safety techniques.

In the Philippines, the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) is the single administrator that implements the rules and regulations to ensure that all measures undertaken by maritime schools, training centers, and other concerned parties are in compliance with the STCW code. For this reason, obtaining an STCW certificate was made mandatory for all seafarers to advance in their maritime career.

How to Obtain an STCW Certificate?

The STCW courses start with the most basic progressing to the more advanced trainings. Aspiring seafarers may start their naval career by taking the STCW 95 also known as the Basic Safety Training (BST) at any MARINA-accredited maritime training centers across the Philippines.

The STCW 95 usually takes 5 days to finish the following areas:

  • Basic Firefighting
  • Personal Safety
  • Elementary First Aid
  • Personal Survival

The STCW courses were created to equip masters, officers and ratings with needed knowledge on how to face potential hazards and stay safe amidst high waters. Once armed with the necessary skills, seafarers can start pursuing their seafaring career.
